Midsummer Frolic, June 20-21, 1998
(formerly known as Midsummer Campout in Brooklyn)
(formerly known as Midsummer's Delight)
(formerly known as War of the Roaches)
In honor of Midsummer's Eve,
the Canton of Whyt Whey, in the Crown Province of Østgarðr,
will sponsor a weekend camping event in the wilderness of Brooklyn, NY.
The site is Floyd Bennett Field, a Federally owned former airport in
Gateway National Recreation Area, a wildlife preserve on a wooded
peninsula jutting into Jamaica Bay.
We think dogs are allowed on leash.
The site comes with its own livestock, of both six-legged and eight-legged
varieties: bring insect repellent, citronella, flea-and-tick collars,
etc. and inspect yourself for ticks before going to bed.
Again, the site is owned by a Federal agency, and we want to make a good
impression: be extremely careful with glass containers,
leave the site cleaner than we found it,
and absolutely no illegal substances or underage drinking.
We hope to celebrate Midsummer with much singing, dancing, drumming,
music, and possibly a little axe-throwing. The bardic circles, trials,
and competition will be led by Lady Branwen
of House Raven's Moon. Middle eastern dance and drum to be led by
Kamiilah and Kazuki. More details sure to
follow!
Please send site queries and reservations to the autocrat,
Kamiilah al-Sudanii. If you enclose a
SASE, you'll get a confirmation and site map.
Send dietary questions and concerns to the cooks,
Rufina Cambrensis and
Joshua ibn-Eleazar ha-Shalib.
Please register early, as most of the food will be
prepared off-site in advance. (If you'd like to participate, they're
holding a pre-cooking party on June 13.)
Directions:
- By car:
- Take the Belt Parkway to exit 11 S and get onto Flatbush Avenue southbound.
Cross a bridge, then turn left at the third light (about a mile), at
a sign reading either "Floyd Bennett Field" or "Gateway National
Recreation Area". If you reach the toll booths, you've gone too far.
* Once inside the park, take your first left (towards
"Ryan Visitor Center"), then the first right (at a sign saying "RVC
Visitor Center Left"). Ahead on the right is a big ugly yellow
building straight ahead. When you get there, turn left, then turn into
the parking lot on your right.
Across the street from the parking lot entrance is a sign reading
"Camp Tamarack", which is where we are.
- By public transit:
- Take the 2 subway to the end of the line, the Flatbush Avenue
stop in Brooklyn. At this point you have two choices:
- Take the Q35 bus to the entrance of the park (ask the driver to let
you off there) and walk from * above.
- Wait at the Baskin Robbins above the Flatbush Ave. subway station
at 11 AM, 1 PM, or 5 PM, and a car will be there to pick you up and take
you to the site.
More information to come as it develops.
