Highlights from the Dec. 20 Commons by Odo Levrier Lots of people came and patted me and talked to me, and I snoofled them. Then they stopped talking to me, so I went to sleep. When I woke up, they were standing around talking and eating, so I got up and let everyone pet me again. After everyone left, I went for a walk. It was a good meeting. (Addenda by Stephen Bloch): Northpass: The new Seneschal will be elected on Jan. 16, and relieve Michelle on Jan. 31. They need a new Chronicler by then too. Ro Bordeau is the new Captain of Archers. The Alsace event will cost $20 on-board, no extra charge for merchants; Denise is cooking, and entertainers are particularly sought. Whyt Whey: Lady Kamilah will take over as Seneschal in March. Ben Hitz will be the new herald. Fighter practice is on hold, lacking an affordable winter site; proposal to pass the hat at summer practices to build up funds for this. Broken Bridge: The first Seneschal will be elected on Jan. 12 at 2:30 PM. Seahorse Pursuivant: Canton heralds, please keep him informed. Brigantia has recommended that all local groups come up with titles for their heralds (like "Seahorse" or "Brigantia"). Lions End: Progress underway again on making banners for Province and all Cantons. Progress underway on beginning archery handbook. Midsummer Lion will be a potluck/picnic, at the same site as last year; since the site has such lovely grounds, people are encouraged to find period lawn games. St. Valentine's will be at the same (wet!) site as last year, 3 blocks from the Hicksville LIRR station. The hall holds 150: 72-80 on-board, with off-board and out-board tickets available too. In keeping with the Spanish theme, there will be a don Juan contest, in addition to the traditional Nonce Lovers' Game, raffle baskets, brewing contest (emphasis on red liquids), and bardic and storytelling contest. Chronicler: As always, we need contributions, especially event chronicles. We also need contributions for the Web page (see the Chroniclers' Notes). Vicereine: There are two EKU sessions coming up: 1/25 in Carolingia, and 3/15 in Frosted Hills (rescheduled, so it conflicts with Celtic Silliness -- bummer). The next Royalty are both quite new to the SCA, so be especially patient and helpful to them. The next Barleycorn will probably be a Royal Progress, with a Kingdom-wide brewing contest. Provincial Seneschal: Remember the Provincial Officers' Meeting, 11 Jan at 7:30 PM, Sean's place. We'll finalize the Provincial Bylaws and publish them: Canton Chroniclers please send mailing lists to Deborah and Steve so we can do it as a single mass mailing, without duplication. Miscellaneous: Schola in Settmour Swamp cancelled. "Semi-enchanted" event on 22 Feb. in Ravenhill (Southbury, CT). "Springtime in the Gobi" on 22 March in An Dubh. Quote of the Evening: "What will we fight over?" "The right to pillage Aethelmearc." Next Commons: on 17 Jan at Alison's in Brooklyn, 85 Eastern Parkway Apt. 4A. Take 2 or 3 subway to Eastern Pkwy. Walk 1/2 block and ring buzzer 22.
